M. Hamza is one of the most prolific Sudanese artists alive in the world today. Originally from Khartoum, his portraits are consistently in demand.

From the South Sudan Ministry of Culture to H.R.H Prince Charles arriving by helicopter to personally launch one of his earlier exhibitions, his patrons are as passionate as they are influential.

For over forty years M. Hamza has perfected his craft. An incredibly private and extremely humble man- equally as celebrated for his philanthropy as his technique, in November 2018 he was invited to exhibit at the Louvre’s most prestigious art fair as joint guest of honour alongside Omar Saif Ghobash, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to France.

The Black Pearl Collection is at the heart of the last decade of work that M. Hamza has shown around Europe and Africa.

His strong inclination to weave black women seamlessly into the narrative by using traditional techniques and classic fashion, each individual was selected, whether Doctor, Engineer or Mother, on the basis of their fierce desire for autonomy and right to self determination.

His best known and most revered portrait from the collection, ‘The Black Pearl’ (2012), is a bold statement for decolonisation and the end of oppressive rule, inspired by Vermeer’s ‘Girl With a Pearl Earring’.

It is currently under protection inside the US Embassy in Khartoum. Considered to be Sudan’s ‘Mona Lisa’, it is one of the most loved and politically powerful portraits of today.

A celebration of female empowerment and resolve ‘The Black Pearl’ articulates both the endeavour of Sudanese women and the climb for civil rights worldwide.

With great humility and reverence U.S. Charges d’Affaires Steven Koutsis deliberately chose to stand beside it on behalf of the United States while addressing the international community and honouring the fallen of the Khartoum massacre.

Whether being honoured or made fun of such as on Netflix’s ‘Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj’, it continues to ignite debate more than ever.

Having sold to private collectors only, M. Hamza was due to exhibit in early spring 2020. However, the horrific events are happening now.

The physical reality is that ordinary women are in some cases having to run a gauntlet of soldiers trying to rape them in an effort to find the most basic provisions.

The women and children of Sudan need help now. With the onset of famine, it is the poor and vulnerable that are most likely to suffer.

In an unprecedented and historical collaboration, Al-Saddiq Al- Raddi, one of Sudan’s most beloved poets has agreed to donate his poetry to the art.

With work published in The London Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement and one of the few poets in residence at the Petrie Museum – Al-Raddi has been making waves in the west for over a decade.

Collaborating on limited edition prints and even a bag, both artists are doing everything they can to champion the women back in Sudan.

We are looking for a handful of people to help push this forward. Though we want as much of the money to go straight to the women who need it, we understand people have to be paid.

Please let us know how you can help. (Contact franky.websitemadness@gmail.com)
